Animated Mathematics - Cycloid

A presentation at the SVG Open 2003

The presentation deals with the definition and derivation of a cycloid that is obtained by the motion of a point at the circumference of a rolling wheel without sliding along a straight line.

The effect is achieved by the simultaneous application of two animated transformations: A rotation and a translation :

The drawing of the cycloid uses a Quadratic-Bezier path obtained from the program presented earlier in this talk. One can actually observe the accuracy of the approximated curve.

Finally the motion is stopped and the parametric form of the curve is graphically derived.
